Bonded labour: Foreign migrant workers were made to pay recruitment fees in their home country and pay ongoing fees to work. This issue had been resolved.

Actions or plans to address this risk Organisation’s response: The B&Q Ethical Sourcing team worked with Amfori BSCI in collaboration with other retailers to support the supplier to set up a reimbursement plan to pay affected workers back in instalments and implement new restrictions on foreign workers’ recruitment-related fees. By October 2023, all the fees had been reimbursed and the case was closed.

Excessive working hours: Workers doing up to 136 hours’ overtime per month. Workers were also observed to be working up to 29 consecutive days without a day off. This issue had been resolved.

Actions or plans to address this risk Organisation’s response: Screwfix Ethical Compliance team worked with the supplier, challenging them to conduct a thorough Root Cause Analysis to ascertain the underlying reasons behind their non-conformance. A new shift pattern was created that reduced overtime and simultaneously a wage increase was put in place to minimise financial detriment to the workers. Additional workers were also brought in to reduce the risk of excessive overtime. A follow-up audit resulted to the non-conformance being closed out.

Health and safety: Issue found relating to childcare facilities compromising children’s safety. The site crèche had no washing facilities and was in an unsafe location. This issue had been resolved.

Actions or plans to address this risk Organisation’s response: The Screwfix Ethical Compliance team worked with the supplier to find a solution. As a result, the crèche was moved to a larger room which had more facilities and was in a safer area. A follow-up audit verified the changes to be sufficient and closed out the non-conformance.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has produced a list of the most common signs of forced labour. To ensure our suppliers adhere to our compliance standards we continued to tighten our internal policies and requirements. In 2023: Each banner has introduced resources responsible for onboarding and verifying GFR suppliers. A film and factsheet with our compliance requirements were provided to new and existing GFR suppliers. We have a new programme to support our GNFR suppliers improve their EcoVadis scores. We developed a bespoke modern slavery training for our Group Procurement colleagues
